This year we are celebrating the fourth of July on the Lake. We have food, swim rings, bug spray and a great spot on the beach with a view of the fireworks. I miss watching the big show in Washington DC at the monument, but this show lasts 20 minutes and we don’t have to fight the crowds of people. It’s much more peaceful and refreshing to be at the Lake.

We always get several dozen kids ringing our doorbell on Halloween night, looking for handouts. I like to pass out the fun sized candy bars. I make sure that they are all peanut free because I know that a lot of people have allergies to peanuts. I put all of the goodies in a large bowl near the door and I let the kids reach in with one hand and grab a handful. If the kid is really little I’ll let the kid take two handfuls. By nine pm the porch lights go out and I head to bed, hoping that when we get up in the morning the mailbox will still be intact and the cars un-egged and unvandalized. So far we’ve been lucky; but some of our neighbors have not been so fortunate in years past. I guess the kids didn’t like their candy!

Today is Father’s Day! I would like to take this opportunity to wish any and all fathers a Happy Father’s Day. I will be remembering my own dear father today, who passed away in 1980, at the way too young age of 54. He died of cancer, never having smoked a cigarette in his entire life. I loved him dearly and miss him awfully. If I lived close enough to the cemetery, I’d be putting flowers on his grave today, but I don’t live close enough. So having him in my thoughts has to be good enough.

I know it sounds crazy, but my father was a rock musician when I was a kid. My sisters and I loved to go watch his band perform. He had a band with a lead guitarist, a drummer, a singer, and my father played the electric organ. That band never made “the big time” but they were a very popular band for private parties; they had “gigs” every single Friday and Saturday night, and an occasional “gig” on other special occasions too. Whenever a new pop song hit the charts, my father would run out and buy the record and bring it home and make my sisters and I listen to the song over and over and over again to write down the lyrics for him, while he would listen to the music and try to figure out how to play it. I cannot tell you how quickly we got sick of listening to “American Pie!”

I tried dying my hair once, back around ten years ago. It was a total disaster! I made a HUGE mess, ruined several towels AND the shower curtain, and the dye didn’t even cover the gray hair at all! So I decided that I would not try it again, I considered that a lesson learned that I was wasting my time, money, and energy on trying to look younger than I am.

So, color me gray! LOLOL!

I have a dear friend “J” that I met back in 1970, when we were in high school together. We were both new to the school, and it was the first day of classes. Back in those days, gym class was divided up by sex; boys and girls did NOT have gym class together. (I understand that now gym class is co-ed.) Anyway, it was gym class, and the teacher told us to “partner up” with someone else in the class. All of the girls excited partnered up with girls they already knew, and “J” and I were the only two girls in class that did not immediately race to an established friend to be partners.

I went up to “J” and said “would you like to be my partner” and she was so grateful to be asked, she gushed “yes I’d love to!”

We have been dear, close friends ever since, even though we live on opposite ends of the US. I’m on the East Coast, and she is in California.

When I was growing up, my mother was always trying to get us kids to play board games. Starting with Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders, and eventually moving up to Checkers, Chess, Sorry, Scrabble, Monopoly, Cribbage and Risk.

I never really enjoyed playing any of the games, I prefer co-operative activities over competitive activities, and to be perfectly honest, I felt bad at the end of the game whether I had won or lost. I found that most of the people that I played games with were poor sports, sulking when they lost, and bragging beyond reason when they won. Either way, I did not enjoy it at all.

As I got older and entered the “dating scene” I found that many of my dates and their families wanted to play board games, too. I found that they were usually all poor sports, too. My first hubby “thought” he enjoyed playing board games, but whenever he would bring one home he would only play it with me until I would win a game, and then we would never play that game again! After about a year we had a closet full of board games we had only played a couple times, so I eventually just stopped playing games.

I imagine that if I had been surrounded by people who were all around good sports, I might have learned to enjoy playing games, but that simply didn’t happen.

So many decisions, so many responsibilities, and not being able to run to their parents to “fix” whatever the problem of the month might be. Although I married at an older age than my sisters, and my girlfriends, if I knew THEN what I know NOW I might have been a whole lot slower to get married at all.
