Shopping without barcodes?

I’ve been reading articles about the future of shopping, about how people are going to be acting as their own cashier and bagger.  I’ve been wondering how the stores were going handle inventory management and avoid an increase in shoplifting.  Well, I think I found the answer to my own question while browsing the Internet today.  The answer, I think, is RFID.  What is RFID you ask?  Radio Frequency Identification.  What is RFID you STILL ask?  What RFID is, is a replacement to the barcode system.

In the RFID process, each item is tagged with a special tag made with special tag printers.  Each tag responds to a radio frequency similar to the way bar codes respond to a bar code reader.  HOWEVER what is so cool about this is that each individual tag does not need to be scanned.  An entire bag of products can simply be passed by the reader.  Or, the entire shopping cart can simply be walked by, without even being unloaded!  The reader picks up the signals from the special tags and then the customer pays for the merchandise, and is then given a receipt that is printed out from one of the special Intermec printers that are designed to be used as part of the system.

Intermec is a company that sells all of the products needed to set up this kind of data collection and management equipment to be used in an RFID environment.  They even sell portable equipment that can be taken out in the field and used for hours without the need of any electrical outlets!

This is really cool technology we’re talking about here, but it does make me worry about the job security (or lack thereof) for cashiers and baggers!

Learning a lot about blogging and marketing a business

One of my sons is running a business, primarily through online marketing out of our home.  I was reading the websiteoffice.com website page he left open on our machine today and was very interested to be learning a lot of stuff about the Internet and page rank and search engine optimization.  This is a good reference for using the Internet to run a small business!

Need new slippers

I thought I had comfy slippers. I bought them new last fall, and I’ve been wearing them around the house every day since then. They have well padded soles, and are the “scuff” style that you just slide your feet into. I couldn’t wait to get home and take off my shoes and put on my slippers. Well about a week ago I bought some of those orthopedic things that you put into your shoes to make your shoes more comfy, and now I have to tell you that I hate taking off my shoes and putting on my slippers!  And the past three nights I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night with cramps in my feet; I think it was because I was wearing my slippers all the time and my feet wanted the extra support of my shoes.  So I think I need to buy new slippers, and maybe put the orthopedic insoles in the slippers!

Frequent flier miles

I travel quite a bit.  So I’ve been thinking about getting an Airline Miles Credit Card that gives me airline miles on it as rewards.  The airlinecreditcardrewards.com website reviews and compares the three most popular airline miles cards and gives you the opportunity to apply for them from within their site.  So I’ll be checking out the cards through them when I’m ready to order one.
