Taking Europe by storm

I find it absolutely amazing how Barack Obama seems to be winning over the entire world on his tour to Europe.  He seems to be rapidly becoming as well loved as just about any American Politician could be!  Very interesting, considering he hasn’t been elected President yet!

It’s really a shame

I was reading on the Time.com website that the International Olympic Committee is upholding a ban agains Iraq participating in the Olympics. I didn’t realize that there was a ban in the first place, so I was surprised and interested enough to keep reading. The story was talking about how the government was interfering too much with the country’s Olympic Committee, and how their Olympic Committee was disbanded last May. And then it was talking about how four of the Committee members, including the chief had been kidnapped two years ago and are still missing! Good Grief!

It’s really too bad, but certainly understandable!

Cuba is changing

Since Raul Castro has taken over running Cuba from Fidel Castro, some pretty significant changes have been happening in Cuba; all of them good.  Raul Castro lifted restrictions on Cubans owning computers and mobile phones, and signed the UN human rights accords.  He has also authorized payments of productivity bonuses to workers, and he is going to try to increase farm productivity by putting more state-controlled farm land into the hands of private farmers.   I think these are all changes for the better!

Amazing hostage recovery

Every time I turn on the news I’m hearing about the amazing hostage recovery operation that occurred in Columbia.  The details of the covert operation, infiltration of the organization that held the hostages and how the operation went down are simply amazing!  I was surprised to learn that some of the hostages had been held for several years.  I thought most hostages ended up being killed after a short period of time.  I’ve been listening to recounts of how badly the hostages were treated while they were in captivity, with chains around their necks, and it just makes me shudder.

I am so very happy for the hostages and their families that they were rescued, and I have to say that this is ONE thing that has happened that was good during George Bush’s presidency.
